I will not lie to you, this post started off as a two page monologue of me waxing poetic about the definition of art, and while I am not writing this blog for (purely) entertainment purposes, I'm sure as hell not going to let it bore ME. Also, I sorta did the talky-talky-talky thing last week and despite my ability to talk AT people and things for an indefinite amount of time, every now and then even I appreciate a bit of succinctness. So instead, here's a cute video I stumbled (or rather, Stumble!(tm)'d) upon a while back and thought would be fun to share.
Maybe it's just a remnant from my past (yes...past...as in...not ongoing...yeah...) obsession with anime (because let's face it, this kid obviously paraded around the house playing Sailor Moon while all the other boys were out doing some sort of sport-thing...and not as Tuxedo Mask [Sailor Jupiter for the win bitches!]), but to this day I still love animation and most definitely consider it an art. If you define art based on skill, go out and watch some Miyazaki films. They are all unfailingly gorgeous. If it's an emotional response you need, I dare you to watch Pixar's UP! and not cry (if you do not cry you are a soulless, heartless monster and I'm going to need your help when it comes time to for me to audition to replace Noted Fashion Photographer Nigel Barker on the Judge's Panel in season 23 of ANTM). And if it's historical reflection you're looking for, a sign that an artwork embodies the time/social period it was created during, well then watch ANY animated Disney movie and behold a freakin' time capsule of past values (namely, princess movies, namely, eff you, Snow White and finally, Get. It. Jasmine and Belle.).
As human beings, art has been a part of our history for...well, time immemorial (actually, that' probably not true, but I'm too lazy to wiki-hunt for dates when I can much more easily make rampant over-generalizations with no consequences) and frankly, it's something that all age groups benefit from. Even if you intentionally or unintentionally label animation as a "kid's thing", what better group to expose to art? It's just like cynicism, the earlier you expose them to it the better off they'll be.
